Preparing for Linux Kali installation

First, download the Kali Linux ISO from the official website. You have a wide variety of ISO images to choose from: both 32-bit and 64-bit images, which can come with different user interfaces (XFCE, Gnome, KDE, LXDE, etc.). You can download images via HTTP or via Torrent protocols. Be sure to save the downloaded file in a custom folder. Here’s an example file path: C:VirtualBoxkali-linux-2020.1-amd64.iso.

Check the SHA256 checksum to ensure the image is consistent after the download is complete.

Step 1. Create a new VM in Kali

To continue installing Kali Linux on VirtualBox, you will need to create a new VM.

To do this, open VirtualBox, click on the Machine button, and then on the Create button.

Next, enter the basic parameters. Here's an example of what information you’ll enter:

Name: Kali Linux x64

Machine folder: E:VirtualVirtualBox (it is not recommended to use the system partition for storing virtual machines)

Type: Linux

Version: Debian * 64

Memory size: at least 4096 MB

Hard disk: Create and configure a new hard disk, as well as set the location of the virtual disk file; for example: C:VirtualVirtualBox Kali Linux_x64.vdi

The virtual disk files are usually saved in the default VM folder.

The virtual disk file size must be at least 20 GB and the hard disk file type must be VDI.

Step 2. Launch Kali Linux on VirtualBox

Boot from the virtual DVD and, in the Boot Options menu for Kali Linux, select the graphical installation. Select the language, location, keyboard layout and other criteria. You will also need to set up your network, domain name, passwords, clock, etc.

Next, partition the disk; if this is your first time, select the Use entire disk option. In this case, confirm the deletion of data from this disk. Now decide how much of the disk will be allocated to each partition. You can select the All files option in one section. When you are done, click on the Finish partitioning button.

Next, configure the package manager. This is where the network mirror option should be activated, which will allow you to update application packages from online software repositories.

Next, provide information about the proxy server. If you are not using it, just click Next.

You will then be prompted to install the GRUB boot loader to your hard drive. Click the Yes button and complete the installation. Then restart your computer and you will see the Kali Linux login screen. Enter your username (root) and password and you will be taken to your Kali Linux desktop.

Step 3. Deploy OVA Template Kali on VirtualBox

This method of installing Kali Linux on VirtualBox is much easier, as most of the settings are already enabled by default. Go to the official Offensive Security website and download the appropriate OVA template, such as the 64-bit Kali Linux VirtualBox OVA image.

Now go to VirtualBox and open Tools. Here, select the Import tab and you will see the VA Import Wizard. Select the main suggested VM parameters (the default virtual machine name is “Kali-Linux-2020.2-vbox-amd64” in this example). Next, define the directory where the virtual machine will be deployed from the template and select 'Create new MAC addresses for all network adapters'.

Next, enable the function Import hard drives as VDI. Wait for the import to complete and select the Kali virtual machine deployed on VirtualBox in the template. Now click on Start. Enter your username (root) and password and press Enter. You are now on the Kali Linux desktop.

Use VMFS Recovery for VM data safety

If there is something wrong with your virtual machine (if .vmdk files are missing or deleted), you can restore them and rebuild the virtual machine using DiskInternals VMFS Recovery.

In this chapter, you will learn about how to install kali Linux on VirtualBox. In the previous chapter, we have installed the VirtualBox, now its time to install the Kali Linux. Let’s install the Kali Linux step by step. If you haven’t installed the VirtualBox, then please visit the chapter How to install VirtualBox in Mac OS and install it.

Step 1:

  1. Open VirtualBox and click on new
  2. Now a popup window will appear
  3. Name: Provide the machine Name
  4. Machine folder: location of the files
  5. type: Linux
  6. Version: Debian (64-bit)
  7. Click on continue

  1. Assign the ram size
  2. Click on continue

Step 3:

  1. Choose the hard disk here
  2. Create a virtual hard disk now
  3. Click on continue

Step 4:

  1. Select the VDI (Virtual box disk image)
  2. Click on continue

  1. Select dynamically allocated
  2. Click on continue

  1. Now set the limit for memory
  2. Click on Create

I format my usb key to exFat and a guid partition. Then with the dd command I burn the kali-linux iso to the drive by getting the disk identifier with the diskutil list command.

To succeed to boot to the usb drive, I have to boot without plug it and hold down the option key, then I can plug the usb drive and click to EFI boot.

When I'm here, I have the Kali-Linux menu (Sometimes I just get a black freezing screen) the kali-linux menu is very small in the top-left corner.

So I try to use the graphical install and it freeze everything I try. I tried to go to my usb drive and modify the syslinux.cfg file to change 'vesamenu.c32' to 'menu.c32' but when I do that I can't get the kali-linux menu anymore.

Someone succeeded to install a dual boot on a MacBook Pro Sierra 10.12 and Kali-LInux 2.0 ? How can I do that ?

I have managed to get Kali Linux running from USB with persistence, on a Macbook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) with macOS Sierra.

Here's my guide explaining the process I used. I've tried to make it easy to follow, whilst still being as detailed as possible.

Part 1: Preparing the USB

Note: if you don't want persistence, just create 1 partition and finish the guide at part 3.

  1. Open disk utility (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility).
  2. Select your USB device.
  3. Choose erase.
  4. Name: Untitled Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Scheme: GUID Partition Map.
  5. Click done.
  6. Select your newly formatted USB device.
  7. Choose partition.
  8. Click the '+' symbol at the bottom of the window.
  9. Name (left partition): Persistence Name (right partition): Kali Linux.
  10. Format (both partitions): MS-DOS (FAT).
  11. Click apply.
  12. Click partition.

After this process, your partitions (Kali Linux and Persistence) may have renamed themselves to 'K L' and 'P' respectively. If this does happen, simply rename them, and follow the rest of this guide.

Part 2: Installation

  1. Download your ISO of choice (I have tested this with Kali Linux full).
  2. Drag the ISO file to your desktop.
  3. Rename to 'boot.iso'.
  4. Download the following EFI files: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/49525238/efi.zip
  5. Extract the 'efi.zip' file to desktop.
  6. Drag 'boot.iso' to efi > boot.
  7. You should now have the following files contained within efi > boot: boot.efi, boot.iso, bootX64.efi, enterprise.cfg.
  8. Copy the efi folder to the root of the Kali Linux partition on the USB drive.

Part 3: Booting Kali Linux

  1. Restart your machine.
  2. Hold the option key (alt) as soon as you hear the chime.
  3. Follow the onscreen options (for me I press the '1' key twice, and then it boots).
  4. After a few minutes, you should be prompted to enter login details.
  5. Username: root Password: toor

Part 4: Persistence

  1. Open up GParted (you can find this by clicking the bottom icon in the task bar to the left, then you should see a search function - search GParted).
  2. Once GParted is open, click the dropdown menu to the right and select the bottom option. If you only have one USB inserted, it should be /dev/sdb.
  3. Select the partition with the label 'Peristence'.
  4. Click partition at the top.
  5. After this (choose unmount if the option is available) choose format to and then choose ext3.
  6. Click edit at the top.
  7. Choose Apply All Operations.
  8. Apply.
  9. Select the newly formatted partition.
  10. Click partition at the top.
  11. Click label.
  12. Label 'Persistence'.
  13. Choose Apply All Operations.
  14. Apply.

Part 5: Reboot

  1. Restart your machine (as in step 3).
  2. Change your desktop background to a solid colour (grey for example).
  3. Restart you machine again.
  4. If your desktop background is the colour you changed it to, you now have persistent storage.
